Don't know what to call this one

Following a Tosh HDD recovery on a new laptop, noticed there was only one adaptor in the Registry >> Profiles and one in the Unmanaged Signatures.

There are these entries in the Home Gateway which look like duplications but as I'm not sure, don't want to delete anything although I could always backup first.

Scrolling down, you will see what I mean about the adaptors in Profiles and Signatures.
Regbit.jpg
In Network & Sharing the SSID is showing for both the LAN and Wireless.

Did a Factory reset via the pin hole, switched off router then deleted the adaptor in Network & Sharing as well as those in the Profiles and Signatures and started the router setup afresh, hoping two separate adaptors would be recreated.

After the initial config and prior to Jumping to Wireless, got the page relating to setting either for Public/Home. As this was for the LAN, set it to Public.

Went on to enter the wireless settings - Username, SSID etc and successful config, found nothing had changed except that now, the LAN which is still using the SSID, is showing as Public and when wired, the Ethernet light on the router remains on after the laptop is switched off. I guess this is because it's using the SSID instead of a LAN connection.

I can toggle the LAN to either Public or Home by clicking on it but not sure which is the best option for security purposes.

I did an ipconfig /release & renew which came with the message that an error had occurred, when releasing the Pseudo Loop Interface and that it could no longer find the file. Don't know what effect that is having as in the netsh/show all, it's showing as connected, I'm still online and can browse okay.

Any and all help/suggestions will be most welcome.

Not really surprised there hasn't been any input on this one as I took the laptop back to PC World today and while they agreed the Ethernet light shouldn't still be on at the router when the laptop is switched off, they had no explanation for it.

The only explanation as to why the LAN was sharing the SSID, was that must just be the way Windows has decided to configure it following the HDD recovery but it would have no effect on functionality.

Had enquired if I could export the Registry Profile and Signatures from my other laptop and merge them with this one. Yes, but as every thng was working, not much point.

Guess I'll just have to live with it.

The light is probably still on because "Wake-On-LAN" is enabled/supported on the ethernet card

If you are refering to the way the "Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center" shows the active network
It will generally (from my experiance) name the network after your SSID, It's just a name to give it, click on the icon and you can hange the name.
But the fact it shows the wired and wireless connections against it just means that they are both connected to the same LAN/router and not that the wired connection is using the SSID

You also said

your LAN connections should be set to Home, assuming that you are connected to your router at home

Hi kmr1962,

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think it really matters whether the LAN is Public or Home, on my other laptop it's set as Public, showing two separate connections whereas the map on this laptop, other than both the wireless listed together just shows one.

I've erased the SSID for these shots and this one is from my other laptop.

And this one is from this laptop

In the power settings, there isn't an option for Wake-on-LAN and the light only remains lit after the laptop is switched off if the power lead is still live. The light goes out when it's removed and on shut down, it briefly goes out before coming back on.

The only option with the connections on this one is to either make them both Home or both Public.

The LAN Network profile is what is created to access the router on initial setup, the Wireless profile isn't created until you "Jump to Wireless Settings" for those settings but for some reason on this laptop, they have merged.

In the Registry/Profiles, the Wireless adaptor Description and Profile name are the same (both SSID) whereas in the Signatures/Unmanaged, the Description and Profile name are showing as Network/SSID respectively.

On the laptop TOM-TOSH it looks to me as if you have a fixed IP address on one of the network cards (The wired one probably)
Thats exactly how mine shows up if I have DHCP on the Wireless card and a fixed IP address on the wired card.
network.png
As regards the Wake-On-LAN settings
Open the network card device in device manager and Check the advanced settings tab, there may be a Wake-On-LAN/WOL setting there
nic.png
As regards the link light going out when the power is removed and going out momenterily as the laptop starts up, thats exactly what I would expect with WOL

Both laptops have been set up the same where they are set to obtain an IP auto. The only Static IP that has been set is for an All in one printer which is done on the router.

The Wake on Magic Packet for both are set at the default Enabled.

The LAN light on the router should only come on (when wired) on startup and go out on shutdown regardless of the laptop running on battery or mains as my older one (TOM-TOSH) does.

The LAN light with the newer one, if wired on startup and connected to the mains, will come on as soon as the wall socket is switched on which is before the laptop is switched on and will remain on until the mains power is either disconnected or switched off at the wall socket.

I have noticed it go out briefly on shut down on the newer laptop but as I've already said, it will remain on as long as the ethernet and power leads are connected and the power lead is live.

The only difference for me is that the newer one has had a HDD recovery done which is when the configuration of the adaptors changed.

The Properties on mine are slightly different to yours. This is from my older laptop as I'm using that one at the moment, but it's identical to the newer one.

Hi, in respect of your Ethernet light staying on, this is normal for modern motherboards and the network card is going into suspend mode, there maybe an option to turn this off in the bios, personally I don't on Ethernet connected machines.

With regards to your network location the BRUV-TOSH is set up correctly see here this explains it better http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... k-location this will mean you can share files and printers within the trusted known network.

You can change the name of the network by clicking on the icon (house).

Thanks for your reply but you may remember from my first post, that these events did not occur until after the HDD recovery and a PC World tech and his supervisor both agreed that the light should not still be on after the laptop is switched off.

While they didn't have an explanation for that, they acknowledged what I was saying regarding the Profile and Signature entries, but could not explain why that should be after a HDD recovery either.

I'm going to backup and export the Registry Profile and Signatures entries on this laptop and copy and merge those from the other laptop onto this one, as this seems to be the only solution to resolve this, then will see if it accepts the new setup.

:D My personal experience of PC World Tech you could put on the back of a postage stamp, they use diagnostic software and if they can't find a fault the item get's returned to the manufacturer.

The HDD recovery is Windows 7 the O/S has decided to set/initialise it that way, why, I wished I knew. To give you a scenario, I have recently deployed 16 brand new identical laptops on the school network, these are all installed by Windows deployment services. All goes well they boot to W7 except 2 are not showing wireless connections, quick look in device manager shows they are disabled, so I enable them, when I get back to these 2 to add them to their domain group 1 of them is showing the wireless disabled, so I enable it. To cut a frustrating story short the only way I could get the wireless to stay enabled was to redeploy W7, why, I have no idea, but it's still running and no more problems.

As I said what I would do is to click on the public network link and from the network selection select home, the MS link from my post explains each network connection type and it's functionality.
I'm going to backup and export the Registry Profile and Signatures entries on this laptop and copy and merge those from the other laptop onto this one, as this seems to be the only solution to resolve this, then will see if it accepts the new setup.
Interesting, not something I would do, if it barfs W7 will reconfigure itself.

The other thing I forgot to mention, it serves no purpose connecting via Ethernet and having the wireless enabled, if you're using Ethernet switch off the wireless card, if you're using wireless unplug the Ethernet, all that happens is the machine gets assigned 2 ip addresses from the router one for each network connection.
