8800nl Wifi Speed

Post by gstayt2405 »

Hi all,

I've just purchased the Bipac 8800nl to replace my dreadful isp talktalk provided router it's great very stable, excellent on the wired connection but i seem to be having some issues with the wifi i can run speed tests and it will have a download of 55-60mb and then again later in the day a speed test as low as 5-10mb.

The connection is very stable but seems to have massive fluctuation in the wifi speed, have i not got the settings quite right or anything i can do to increase the speed consitently?

Cheers

Try changing the channel the router outputs on, default is 6, so try 1 or 11.

Thanks for the replay it seems to have settled down now, but I can't seem to register a speed any quicker than 57mb even when connected via ethernet.
The line is capable of 75mb and current synced at just under 71mb, but can't seem to push anything higher than 57mb wifi or ethernet.

Try testing the ethernet connection with speedtest.net.

The performance of any laptop or pc may even be a limiting factor.

Also, make sure you use the giganet port on the 8800nl

It's definately not the laptop my speed tests measure in the high 60s when using wifi on my neighbours home hub 5.

i have the talktalk HG635 setup as an access point because, for me, it out performs the 8800nl in wifi performance. we have 11 devices that use wifi, three that use unhealthy amount of youtube daily, and i can feel it groaning under the stress

great router though just prone, in our house, to wifi slowing down and needing a reboot... not that any of that helps you :|

I had a similar problem with my 8800NL so I bought a 5Ghz adaptor and hooked that upto my laptop. The increase in speed is quite noticeable, with 2.4Ghz it is around 50Mb but when I switch to 5Ghz it goes up to 65/70. The adaptor I bought is a BT Base Station which was on offer in Currys for about £8 last year. Your neighbours BT hub may also have been using 5Ghz if it was a 5A or B.
Hope this helps

I'm confused. According to Billion's specs the 8800NL doesn't support 5GHz?

Yes you are correct but by hooking up the BT Base Station into the Billion Lan 1 port it feeds the 5Ghz signal into the network. I have my laptop and tablet both communicating to the 8800NL at that speed.

I've just noticed something a bit odd with the with my router...

20% transmit power has a higher output than 100% :?

I am using 2.52.d11.
I know there is newer firmware but this one just works, well apart from this setting.
