Bipac 7700N losing and regaining synch

I purchased a Bipac 7700N in October last year. My main aim was to improve stability of the broadband connection. For the first few months it performed very well but over the last few weeks I noticed that it was losing broadband synch with an increasing frequency. Eventually it got into a state where every few seconds it was losing synch and then regaining synch a few seconds later and so on. This made the connection unusable. I power cycled it but this made no difference, I plugged it directly into the master phone socket which made no difference and in the end plugged in my old router which worked without problem. I have now lost confidence in the device. Is it likely to be a hardware fault or a software problem or something about my installation?
