From another forum I frequent:
For those of you with the Billion 7800N you've probably noticed under config>wan>adsl mode>wan interface there's a "PhyR" setting for downstream/upstream which is not ticked by default. I've just found out from Billion support today that PhyR (pronounced fire) is a new technology from broadcom which delivers a ten-fold improvement in noise resilience against impulse noise and delivers a reduction in bit error rates.
I'm on FTTC so it's of no use to me, but others (especially if on a long or noisy line) might find it handy.

Re: Impulse noise protection
I had enabled PhyR after I'd found out about it via the Spaldwick site, (see full URL in "Set Noise Level") but a Billion tech guy who went through my router settings, following a raised ticket to try and see why I was getting such a large SNR variance when wireless to wired connection, told me that this should only be enabled if told to do so by your ISP and disabled it for me ??
Think it had something to do with keeping the SNRM lower than was probably best - whether he was considering tweaked values or not - don't know, but from experience I've found that very rarely do two techs give the same diagnosis
UPDATE
Decided to enable PhyR and tweak back to 3dB and see how it goes.
UPDATE 2
Not very well - had a disconnect and seem to remember it doing that last time I had enabled PhyR.
Have left it on the 3dB prifile and so far so good

Re: Impulse noise protection
It's only really of value if you are using IPTV or other fast streaming services. Other than that you probably wouldn't notice much, if any, difference.

Re: Impulse noise protection
Very nice post ... seems phyR is helping in general (assuming the exchange supports it? )
I am with a broadcom exchange and have seems helped me with a billion 7800
More interesting informations below ... worth to read it 100%
