8800NL bridging mode for Fibre with Apple Time-capsule

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me here, but I'm utterly failing to get bridging mode working with a new 8800NL on a fibre connection with an Apple Time capsule as the actual router behind it, I basically just want to use the 8800 as a straight replacement for the normal BTOR modem.

When I try setting it up as a combine router/modem using the PPoE during the quick setup, its all fine and I can connect successfully.
But I've tried all ways I can see of to use it in bridge mode with no luck.

First I use the quick setup and selected bridging mode there as explained in the user guide, but I never get anywhere. The 8800 never passes the WAN IP onto the router, it's left with a 192 address at best.

Then I tried using the PPoE and editing the connection there, as theres a "half bridge" option there which I thought might do it, that does correctly turn off NAT and the firewall, but again, still no joy getting the WAN IP to the router.

But when I have the device in bridging mode, I don't see any of the same options under the WAN settings, mine is much sparser -

I may be missing something really dumb somewhere, but I can't for the life of me see how I can get this to work, I've updated to the latest firmware posted too, but it really seems like I'm missing something when it comes to bridging mode to make sure its still a bridge for a PPoE connection?

Any help would be gratefully received!

Edit the Bridging WAN PTM interface, then set the '802.1P Priority' to 0 and the ' 802.1Q VLAN ID ' to 101, that should work, once you have entered your broadband username and password in your Apple Time-capsule (PPPOE mode)

Still no joy, the router ends up with a normal 192.168.1.1 address from DNS by the looks of it and then no internet connection.

Have you checked your settings on your time capsule to ensure the WAN is set to PPPOE mode?? (with your username and password entered, it should NOT be set to use DHCP otherwise your will get 192 address)

Also try connecting a PC to the 8800 and dial in with PPPOE to test verify the setup

Yup, I just swapped out the existing modem for the 8800 with all the same PPoE settings without touching them on the router.

Also try connecting a PC to the 8800 and dial in with PPPOE to test verify the setup

Good point, I'll give this a go shortly!

If you still have issues can post a screen shot of your WAN service page and the 'Status' page of the router, so I can double check it for you

Also try resetting the 8800, once resetted, log in click on 'Configuration >> WAN >> WAN Service' edit the 'PTM PPPOE' interface, change the Type to 'Bridging' ensure the '802.1P Priority' is set to 0 and the '802.1Q VLAN ID' is set to 101, click on 'Apply'

Connect your time capsule to port 1 on the 8800NL (the giga port) and check to see if the time capsule dials in and passes authentication, (from looking at your setup if using PPPOE, you will need to pass authentication, hence you should not obtain a internal IP, only if the time capsule is set to obtain a IP address automatically (DHCP) will it obtain a 192 address from the router)

PS - half bridge mode won't work when using FTTC PTM it only works with a ATM (ADSL) connection

Thats despite not changing a single thing on either the time capsule or the modem itself since my earlier try. Either way, finally got it working so thanks for the help!

One final, and probably stupid question now though... Given the modem is basically transparent to the router and anything on the network, how do I connect to the web interface on it now?
The 192.168.1.254 address isn't reachable any more?

You need a direct connection to the 8800 (using one of the LAN ports) with a static IP set (on your LAN card) within the same range, and you should be able to access 192.168.1.254

You need a direct connection to the 8800 (using one of the LAN ports) with a static IP set (on your LAN card) within the same range, and you should be able to access 192.168.1.254
