struggling to get reliable IPTV / multicast issue?

Post by vinnieb »

Hi All,

I've joined talktalk, and trying to get the 7800dxl to work with the streaming iptv service is proving a problem. I've searched through these forums, and found some good postings where others have got 7800 variations working.

But I'm not quite so lucky. The original talktalk kit works fine, so I know there's nothing technically wrong stopping it. If I leave the box with upnp enabled (which id really rather have disabled) things seem a bit better, but even then, I get a picture for about 5 minutes or so, then it cuts off.

If I try with upnp disabled, wan ping enabled, port forwarding on the expected port setup, and all the rest of the settings, similar issue.

This guys post https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Tec ... d-p/969508 talks about setting up forwarding of multicast nets, I wonder if thats the missing piece? But I can't see any options for that (is it done automatically by one of the other multicast settings in the billion config screen maybe).

Really scratching my head with this one, seems really strange it would connect OK (and I assume thats the point that handshaking, firewalls etc would cause a problem if there was going to be one) but then drop off suddenly. Though, I do get a little warning message about picture quality just before it drops (though I assume that the packet stream has stopped, its just degraded before totally stopping).

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Try enabling IGMP Snooping under 'Configuration >> LAN' then change the 'IGMP Snooping Mode' to 'Standard Mode'

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!

Unfortunately, I already had that setting enabled (infact I think i picked that up from some of your posts earlier!)

Weirdly, I just turned everything on when I got home, and I wasnt getting any picture (IPC6023 usual error). I rebooted both TV box and router, still nothing. I set IGMP snooping off (not blocking, totally off) and I got the usual case of picture working fine for approx 5 minutes before it dropped. Set it back to snooping on, and the picture hasn't come back.

It seems really weird to me, id expect either working or not, I cant think what would cause it to drop out after that time.. firewall port issues would be wrong from the start, any sort of routing info id expect to be wrong and cause a fail from the start too.. and I can't imagine settings are dynamically changing mid broadcast.

:(

Surprising update, after looking through every single setting and trying to think what may cause an issue, I hit upon the RIP settings. I had a quick google at it seems somehow related to multicast, and may be enable on the talktalk router by default. Anyway, trial and error I turned it on, set to active instead of passive, and hey presto I have streaming iptv channels back.

Could be coincidence as I've played around with params before which I thought solved it (dns, wan ping, etc) only to find later it stopped working. But its well past the standard 5 minute time out so far..fingers are crossed.
