7800x ping based failover from EWAN to ADSL

Post by dunked »

Living in a rural area I have a wireless WAN connection to a mast at a nearby airfield connected to the EWAN port and ADSL from BT. Which all works fine. The problem I'm having is that when the EWAN fails the suppliers gateway goes down but the link is still up so the EWAN connection is still technically working (you just can't ping anything on the internet). So the 7800x doesn't fail over to BT unless I do it manually e.g. by pulling the power from the EWAN device.

I used to have a 7800n (until it broke) and that could ping a device to see if the EWAN connection was really working and if the ping failed it would failover to ADSL (which is exactly what I need), but I can't seem to find that type of feature on the 7800X - does anyone know if that or something similar is available?

Thanks

Upgrade to 2.32e then follow the attached screen shot to enable ping detection, (so the router will ping a address eg 8.8.8.8 for a internet connection using the primary connection EWAN, when the ping times out, it will failover the ADSL, once the EWAN can ping 8.8.8.8 it will fallback)

Thanks for the info. I've just spent some time upgrading to 2.32e and setting that up - the new failover feature is very similar to that on the 7800N so I'm familiar with the set up.

The snag is it doesn't seem to work - to test the failover I set the hosts to ping some duff addresses e.g. 10.10.4.4 and 10.10.5.5 - on the 7800N that fails over nice and quickly and then fails-back if I change back to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
On the 7800X it doesn't trigger a failover at all, no matter what address I try. The only way the 7800X will failover is if I remove the EWAN cable (or turn off the EWAN router).

So either there's another setting I missed somewhere or there's a bug.

I'll happily try any other ideas.....

Cheers

If you set the ping host option for the EWAN to ping 10.10.5.5 and the PPPOA/ADSL connection to ping 10.10.4.4 this will not work as both IP's (10.10.4.4 and 10.10.5.5) are unpingable, so the device won't failover over as both WANs are unable to ping either IP

Try setting the EWAN to ping 10.10.4.4 and the ADSL/PPPOA to ping 8.8.8.8 it will then failover (it will only failover over to either WAN once it can ping the host address if it can't ping either host addresses then won't failover as it thinks both WAN's are down)

Brilliant - Thank you !

That is a difference from the 7800N which I missed - my bad.

It seems to work really well.

Thanks Again
