I have seen on the forum many times, people ask how to clear the DHCP list and the only answer is to restart the router. Why has it not been implemented into the firmware after so many requests? I don't want to have to restart my router, especially as after the last restart 2 items were allocated the same address!! (8800NL) for fear of DLM klicking in. Don't really want to go back to OR modem and separate router, as it is a backwards step.

Why unable to delete items from DHCP?

Re: Why unable to delete items from DHCP?
Normally items are deleted from the DHCP table when their lease has expired and the devices are no longer connected - at least they do in the 7800N.
My son's phone which is connected to my SSID would appear in the DHCP table when visiting, but would disappear after the lease had expired and he hadn't returned in that period.
As for the DLM, that would only kick in if you rebooted the router a number of times in quick succession - a one off will be no problem.
I've rebooted up to three times in quick succession without my profile being changed before now.

Re: Why unable to delete items from DHCP?
Than ks for the reply. I have several items in my table showing 0 lease time. I can't identify them as the id is empty and I can't name them, so don't bother trying to work out what they are. Mine is an 8800NL BTW.

Yes, I realise you are using a 8800 and was just comparing what I'd experienced with a 7800 and that things move on.
Do you really need to clear the DHCP table or do you just like things tidy ?

Re: Why unable to delete items from DHCP?
I had a couple of items showing that had been allocated the same ip. Also over time, the table becomes highly populated with unused connections due to visitors coming and connecting to the wifi. Would rather be able to clear the table to free it all up.

Re: Why unable to delete items from DHCP?
DHCP can issue the same IP address to another device after the lease has expired to another, although it shouldn't have assigned the same IP address to two connected devices, but if the 8800 doesn't auto delete expired leased items then you will have to reboot it.
Depending upon what these devices are, you could set them up with a reserved IP address either within or outside of the DHCP range and then there shouldn't be an IP address conflict.
If these devices that are getting the same IP are computers then it's best to switch them off prior to rebooting the router.
You would really have to go to town with the reboots before the DLM would step in and alter your profile, so an occasional one would have no effect just as the occasional disconnect doesn't have the DLM step in.
Just pick the best time of day to reboot so that you will get back your best speed.

Re: Why unable to delete items from DHCP?
I've come to the conclusion that DHCP is a waste of time for most households.
If you're a corporate with many people coming on site/off site on a frequent basis, then it makes sense.
On the other hand, if you have 3 or 4 pcs and a couple of mobile phones, then giving them fixed IP addresses make more sense. That way you can turn off DHCP on the router, and turn off the DHCP service on the (windows) pc and the smartphones.
To accommodate visitors, you just need to tell them to use any IP address outside the range of your fixed ones.
That way your pcs will boot faster and the router has less work to do.
