If I change the static DNSs, will the router do a restart?

Billion_fan,

In my topic "Can someone please help me ....." you said:
4. When checking 'Status >> WAN' it will show the DNS servers your ISP is offering, that's all. Of course you don't need to use them. Click on 'Status' to see what DNS servers your router is using.
If I now change the static DNS addresses by plugging new values into the primary DNS and secondary DNS boxes in Advanced Setup > DNS > Static DNS (the DNS Parameters webpage where you're given three options for setting the DNSs, one of which is "Use the following Static DNS IP address", and I then press the Apply button there, will the router automatically perform a restart? As regards the actual IPs themselves, I'm still wanting to get what I see in Status > WAN the same as I see in Status (the opening Summary page), and it rather looks as though the only way of achieving this will be to enter new values.

I'm hoping that if I plug in new IP values as suggested the router firmware will automatically copy the new values into every relevant configuration page where the DNSs are normally seen, including Status, and so correct the anomoly that I'm seeing in the different sections of the router. But I suspect that pressing Apply will cause a restart - which the DLM won't like. The DLM at the exchange seems to wrongly assume that all restarts are due to poor line performance, and accordingly makes changes such as increasing the Interleaving level and increasing the SNR. I've heard others too, complaining about how the DLM tends to work, where VDSL's concerned. The DLM's reaction is often unwarranted. It's merely that the DNSs that my ISP originally gave me and which I plugged in weren't really the right ones.

Outcome:

Being rather desperate to get my router's settings right, especially in respect of DNS, and in the absence of any timely assistance, I took pot luck this morning and inserted the new DNSs into my 8800NL. To my relief, it didn't cause a restart, so I'm jolly pleased about that. Now, throughout my 8800, all DNSs are finally singing off the same hymnsheet.

The lesson I've learnt from this is that, in the first place, when initially configuring the router it's worth double-checking with the ISP what your assigned DNS server addresses will be (that is, if you choose to use the ISP's DNSs, rather than some other DNSs). Then, if you especially want to work with Static DNS, to ensure that the requisite primary and reserve DNS addresses are configured into the Static option in the ppoe or ppoa interface found at Advanced Setup > DNS > Static DNS (Parameters). When the Apply button's pressed there, the addresses get automatically entered into other router pages where the DNSs are normally displayed. It's then useful to check that the DNSs displayed in the information bar found at Status > WAN are the self same IPs.

I hope this in some small way proves useful to other 8800NL users.
