8800NL not connecting to BT infinity 2

Post by thebuckstops »

My old Openreach box stopped receiving DSL signal (light not on), so having verified it was not the cable, I got a Billion 8800NL to replace it, arrived today. Currently I've not tied setting it to modem only, as I want to get it correctly set up first.

The problem I am having is that I cannot get it to connect to Infinity at all. Description follows:

DSL light is on and solid green

I get into Easy Sign On screen without issue

Select DSL, PTM(VDSL), and PPPoE options

I have tried several different username/password combos:
bthomehub@btbroadband.com with no password
Above, with btinternet as password
bthomehub@btinternet.com with no password
Above, with btinternet as password

No other settings changed.

All the above result in "FAIL! WAN Setting is not successful, you can do this procedure again"

VLAN set to 0/101

WAN status page shows pppoa0 stats as connecting; ppp1.1 as Unconfigured; this despite having ppp1.1 as Selected Default Gateway interface and DNS server interface.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what might be going wrong?

If ppp1.1 is showing as un-configured this means it can't sense a VDSL signal, if you have PPPoA showing as connecting this means you are on ADSL, you need to configure the router for a ATM >> PPPoA WAN connection.

Also check with BT on why you are connecting on ADSL

Thank you!

Just to check - the old Huawei OpenReach modems are VDSL, right? And BT Infinity 2 is VDSL? i.e. there's no chance that historically I was connecting over ADSL. Given that, it implies the problem is on BT's side not mine, yes?

You need to check with BT what service you are paying for BT Infinity 2, means VDSL = PTM /PPPoE, ADSL 2+ = ATM/PPPoA

At the moment it seems you are on ADSL, I think the old Huawei Openreach modem was both ADSL and VDSL (can't remember now, it been a long time since I used one)
