ftp server

Post by mickey »

I have a 7800DXL and the documentation says that the USB port allows the device to act as a ftp server. How do I set this up? Do I just connect a usb drive and change some settings - I have looked but can't see any that indicate that it can act as a ftp server - the only options I have under Configuration/USB are: Storage Device Info / User Accounts / Print Server & DLNA.

The reason I ask is: I have a QNAP TS-110 NAS connected on my home network and am looking at backing up the data on it. One of the options I have is to set it to real-time remote replication to a ftp server, as I have a spare usb drive my thinking was I would connect this to the 7800DXL and back up to that using the ftp server functionality.

Ps. Anyone who knows about QNAP, before you ask - yes I have tried connecting the usb drive to it and sync'ing directly but QNAP boxes have a habit of randomly disconnecting the usb drive and it's a right royal pain to get it connected & seen again!!

Any help much appreciated.

Just setup a username and password under 'User Accounts' or if you want to view files that already copied onto the device there is no need to setup a username and password.

Once done, open your FTP client eg (Filezilla) and set it to 'Active' mode (passive mode will not work) once done FTP into 192.168.1.254 username 'admin' and password 'admin' or the username and password you setup. (port 21)

Then you should be able to backup your stuff/access your HD.

tested on firmware 2.32b

Hi, My 7800DX arrived today, I'm not having much luck with FTP either, firmware is 2.32b.

The USB stick is 8GB FAT32. It is identified and displayed in the "Configuration->System->USB->StorageDeviceInfo". It works fine as a DLNA server.

I've tried connecting FTP with the admin account and a created user account, without success. I've tried connecting with FileZilla and FireFTP, both set to active mode.

Here's the FileZilla log:

Status: Connecting to 192.168.1.254:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server
Status: Waiting to retry...

Any ideas?

Just tried connecting from a Ubuntu terminal, it connects and displays "220 Ftp firmware update utility", then you enter the username+password and it does no more until the connection times out.

Just waiting for our engineers to respond regarding the FTP function, it seems to work with dos/command prompt (ftp 192.168.1.254 etc), but not with Filezilla, so I have reported this to our engineers.

They are wokring on a FTP daemon modification and will update us in due course.

FTP access on Firmware 2.32c is now working with common clients.
