New user of 7800DXL with a couple of questions?

Post by Searcher22 »

Hi All

Firstly, when setting it up I tried to change the default IP (changing the third 'set' 192.168.xxx.254) the change was accepted but I then found myself locked out the new IP would not resolve ~ and yes I had used the ipconfig "controls" in the cmd prompt window to ensure the new IP was recognised. I had to factory reset it to start again using the default IP....................not a big problem but I would have prefered to use the IP of my choice. So can it actually be done or not???

Secondly, the DHCP lease time? With other routers I have not paid it much attention as 'they' seemed by design to have unlimited lease :) So will the default 24hous lease get renewed automatically or instead what is the number to enter to make it a non expiring lease???

Lastly, on the dual wireless? Can they both have the exact same SSID name???

Many thanks in advance for the feedback :)

What IP did you chnage too, I want to try and replicate your issue here

It should renew automatically, or you can use the 'Static IP Lease List' to add static IP's to each device via the MAC address, these IP's have to be outside the DHCP range

You can name them the same, but I normally add 5g at the end of the SSID for the 5G band so I know which band I am connecting too

Hi

Sorry for the delay in replying.

In regard to the first question I have realised I post a mistake.................the target default IP I was hoping to create was 192.168.64.1 not as indicated 192.168.xxx.254  so can the one I intended actually work?

Re DHCP leases ~ they do seem to renew AOK, though I may go for Static IP for some devices???

Re SSID name, fair point to at least identify which band each device is using. FWIW I have setup MAC filtering on the 2.4 band...........but lack of knowledge on my part, does say the laptop actually 'use' the SSID or is it just(?) so that when connecting the user knows was the SSID is and as such the right network to click on?

Then other question arising ~ though I surmise my ISP will provide FTTC details i.e. any that are different to the standard DSL login parameters is there a simple guide as the "correct" way to transition the 7800DXL from DSL to FTTC service??? I have no wish to even start to use the ISP's own supplied Router, hence the question :?: :)

Many thanks in advance for the added insight 8-)

Yes the router will work with the IP address 192.168.60.1 as shown the attached screen shot (setup with a FTTC connection)

Regarding the SSID, yes so the customer knows which wireless network they are connecting too, eg this could be your guest 2.4g or a guest 5g network etc

Regarding the FTTC you can follow the UK quick start guide that came with the device which covers a FTTC setup, or you can run throught the quick start option on the router and set the 'Main Port' to 'Ethernet' and follow the rest of the setup.

Hi billion_fan

Many thanks for the reply, though no screenshot to view???

As mentioned when I tried to make the change the GUI hung and I had to do reset...............so having set it up now with Static IP's for some devices & MAC filters etc I feel somewhat reluctant to risk(?) it hanging and needing a reset yet again.

Having said that does the "backup" function create a file with the full configuration settings and as such can a copy be opened and edited in say Notepad and the restored using as need including the altered Default IP??? Or at the very least used to get back all my settings if the change of Default IP fails again?

Attached, (sorry forgot to attach the image)

What I did was change the LAN IP, change the DHCP range, apply, release and renew my IP, and logged in with the new IP >> all working

Yes you can make a backup of you working config, then try and make the change, if you run into issues, you can always restore your backup file (you can also edit the file within notepad/wordpad, but this is not recommended)
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
