QoS setup issue on 7800DXL

Post by ukionthenet »

Hi,
I attempted a QoS setup on the 7800DXL (flashed to Ver.2.32c and factory restored using the reset button). The goal was to limit the upload bandwidth of my iPhone (as you may know the iCloud automatic backup tends to saturate the uplink channel causing lag on every other device). I run on ADSL (uplink 500kbps, downlink 4000kbps).

So I followed these steps:
-assigned a static ip to my iphone (192.168.1.33)
-created a single QoS rule having these fields:
Class Name: iphone
IP Version:4
Direction: LAN to WAN
Internal IP Address: 192.168.1.33
Internal Port: Any
Protocol: Any
External IP Address: Any
External Port: Any
DSCP Mark: Disable (but also tried other values without effects)
Rate Type: Limited (Maximum) : 20%

The above rule doesn't work (I tried a speed test from my phone before and after it), the upload speed remains at 500kbps while I expected to limit it to 100kbps.

Has anyone a working example to actually limit the upload speed of a single device (for every protocol and port)? Thanks in advance.

Tested working here on ADSL and FTTC

I have attached my results with and without QOS

Have you checked your iphone's IP address, as it might be the issue, everything else looks ok on your setup

Thanks for the quick answer.
Since I checked my iPhone IP and it is, as expected, the same set in the rule, I was asking myself if there are other settings to put in other menus to actually enable the rule (i.e.: EWAN Line Speed in my case is upstream: 0 and downstream: 0, is it right since I have ADSL?).

You shouldn't have to input anything in the EWAN Line Speed section, this section is for a FTTC connection

My rules were setup from default, I tested the speed first on a PC, then added the rule and tested the speeds again and it worked without any issue.

Have you checked the time schedule it should be set to 'Always On'

The time schedule is "always on" and I tried also with selected days. No luck.
I will reflash 2.32c firmware, reset with physical button, set again the same qos rule leaving everything else untouched (except ADSL parameter to connect). After that I will post the results.

Even after the router reflash and re entering the basic settings the QoS rule shown above doesn't work. Iphone keeps saturating the uplink in the speed test (double checked ip matching for the rule). Two questions:
-Did you try exactly on a 7800dxl ver 2.32c using wifi 2.4Ghz?
-Is the router QoS service hardware based? In other words, could it be a hardware problem?

thanks in advance

I'll run some tests over Christmas and report back (my test was with a computer connected via LAN)

I am having similar issues - trying to use QoS to restrict bandwidth utilisation on a guest virtual SSID. Happy to provide config files if that would help with testing.

Ok, I discovered the bug... and it is a MAJOR bug in this router.
I spent about 2 hours trying everything, discovering that QoS limitation worked only on download (WAN to LAN) but not upload (LAN to WAN). Couldn't test prioritization since it is difficult.

Then I discovered. I am connected through PPPoA, since I find it slightly faster (at least here in Italy).
I tried to switch to PPPoE and ... Boom... QoS was working correctly.

Ok, I'll switch to PPPoE, even if I find it hard to believe such a major bug was not noticed before...
The main problem is for those users whose providers use only a PPPoA interface... in this case QoS is useless at the moment.

I expect Billion is going to produce a new firmware in no time to correct this.

I am going to post it in the suggestion forum too.

Effectively I've tried only over pppoa. Good job steelstar
