Back To My Mac - UPnP ???? / Remote Access

Hi All,

Absolute noob to the 7800DXL. Have always used NetGear in the past. So my new bit of kit is proving to be a learning curve, to say the least.

Anywho, two questions which I hope you will be able to assist me with. And please, use lamens terms and screen grabs where poss, the tech terminology is all new to me.

Firstly: I want to use Back to my Mac, and have it enabled. However, it is asking that I enable NAT-PMP or UPnP. I have enabled UPnP, by checking the box in that section. Although, this has not resolved the issue, what is and where will I find NAT-PMP. And, once found what do I need to do...????

Secondly: I'd like to access the router's UI remotely. However, on port checking, Shields Up came back with a Fail. How can I go about leaving this option enabled without compromising my security...I understand that I can use Virtual Servers... But I have no idea about how to do so...????

The router should have UPNP enabled by default, if this does not open the ports, manually open the ports to this device using the virtual server section (■Ensure TCP port 5354 and UDP ports 4500 and 5353 are open via the virtual server the internal IP will be your MAC's IP that you want to connect to)

If you want to remotely access your router, you need to enable remote access found under 'Advanced Setup >> Management >> Remote Access' tick the enable button for 'Remote Access' and click on 'Apply'

Then you should be able to login to your device via a remote connection using the WAN IP address, normally stated on the 'status' page of the router (listed as Default Gateway / IPv4 Address)

I attempted your suggestion, but the same issue is still there. uPNP is enabled and yet B2mM still reports issues with NAT-PMP or/and uPNP. Would it be possible to set it up and screen grab how you would do it. I would be able to follow that better than trying to set up the VS blindly.

With regards to remote access. I understand completely. However, when I do enable access, and then probe my ports, it leaves me wide open to attack. Is it possible to hide my port 80 or at least make it appear to the WWW that it is closed. Yet, retain access into my network?

Try following the attached screen shot, this rule should open the ports for 'back to my mac' found under NAT >> virtual server

regarding the remote access feature, this port needs to be opened so you can access the device, hence the reason the port is showing as opened.

The only thing you can do is either specify a IP range that can access your router for example, 80.223.33.44 to 80.223.33.49 is the only range of external IP's thats can access your unit, the other thing to do is make sure you have super secure password so no one can access your unit
