Open Ports - Security Issue?

Post by RandomGeeza »

Why is my router continually opening ports that are then leaving me vulnerable to possible probes and attacks?

I keep having to log into the admin centre and remove them from the virtual server section.

Is this normal behaviour and something I should be worried about. And if not, how do I go about closing these routes of attack for good.

Thanks in advance.

I assume these ports are opened via UPNP.

You can disable UPNP on the router under 'Advanced Setup >> UPnP' select 'Disabled' and click on 'Apply'

WARNING some applications need ports to be opened, if you disable this feature, some applications might not work without manually port fowarding

Ahh yes, I guess you are right. And yes, in order for some of my apps to work, I do need it open.

Given this, is there any security risk having these ports open.

I have a firewall on, on my Mac... Therefore, providing I don't act irresponsibly online, I'm assuming that I will be OK?

I am right in thinking this?
