7800DXL ADSL to VDSL

I'm considering buying a 7800DXL to replace a Netgear router and wireless access point with one box while also providing future-proofing by enabling me to continue using the same kit when upgrading from the present BT ADSL2+ to BT Infinity.

I thought I'd understood that the 7800DXL would do this but viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2568 has made me wonder whether the 7800DXL is the right choice.

Thoughts?

Hi

The 7800 series do not contain a VDSL modem.

When you have FTTC installed which uses VDSL, you usually get a BT Modem which provides a WAN Ethernet socket which you plug into the WAN port of the router. The 7800 internal ADSL modem is then left unused.

All will work as it does now except you will have two boxes.

Currently there isn't a wide choice of VDSL and combined routers.

Yes, that's what I was planning to do but the thread I linked to suggests that BT now provides Home Hub 5 which is a combined device. I don't really want two large devices with overlapping functions, nor do I want BT to have access to my router .

I'm looking at the Draytek 2860N but it would be inappropriate for me to ask anyone here to comment .

You can buy a BT Openreach modem from Ebay fairly cheaply. My Billion 7800DXL is working great with the BT Openreach modem. You might even be able to ask the BT Openreach engineer for one. Just put the Home Hub out of sight and they will probably ask if you have a modem/router, just say no and I bet they'll fetch a modem from the van. It's good having the BT Openreach modem in reserve for troubleshooting as well.

I've looked at the 2860N, and while it has a built in VDSL modem it doesn't provide much in the way of troubleshooting stats.
