7800DXL - poor broadband 1 mile from exchange
Please could I have some guidelines on how to optimise my 7800DXL for a 1M unstable broadband existence in the country. Especially if lots of devices go on, my smartphone gives a warning "checking internet connection"," your connection is unstable", and drops the wifi connection.

You need to post your 'xdsl' stats so first before we can advise.Andrew wrote:Please could I have some guidelines on how to optimise my 7800DXL for a 1M unstable broadband existence in the country. When the issue occurs, can you check the lights on the front of the router, to see if the DSL light is 'blinking' or if the 'Internet' light is offAndrew wrote:xDSL

Re: 7800DXL - poor broadband 1 mile from exchange
With a throughput of just ~2.5meg, multiple devices connected and depending what they are doing could max out the bandwidth and cause the disconnects - but you should be getting a much higher sync rate than you are unless that is what you are paying for.
What is the connection like with just one computer switched on ?
Is your router connected to the master socket and do you have a NTE5 faceplate fitted http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm where you can remove the faceplate and plug the router via a microfilter directly into the test socket to see if the speed improves ? http://www.speedtest.net
Changing the microfilter can also have a beneficial effect, but if there is no improvement when plugged directly into the test socket, then I would advise you to contact your ISP as the Downstream Attenuation should be much lower than 57 when only ~1 mile from the exchange, although the amount of cabling between you and the exchange can be much longer.
The Downstream Attenuation can be artificially increased because of bad quality cabling/joints between you and the exchange and can sometimes be nailed down to bad clips in the cabinet.

Re: 7800DXL - poor broadband 1 mile from exchange
Thank you for your reply.
It works much better with fewer things connected although it is slow.
BT Openreach have checked and remade the connections (a) from telephone cable in lane to telephone cable to my house (it was full of water and upside down) (b) in my house and (c) given me a better filter socket to plug the router in. I bought the Billion router after these changes. It might be a little more than 1 mile to the exchange - copper wires slung between trees - but not that much more.
Is the Billion doing the best it can with what I have got?
regards
Andrew

If you need a increase in speed try setting the SNR to 3 on the SNR page, to see if this improves your speeds, the target SNR downstream value we are aiming for is 3.7dbAndrew wrote:Thank you for your reply.

Re: 7800DXL - poor broadband 1 mile from exchange
Are you really 1m from the exchange?
Your line length is MUCH longer than that
For the attenuation the line is performing pretty well
Try using QOS to manage the bandwidth (saturating the upstream is normally the main issue)
Have you checked Phyre is on ?

Re: 7800DXL - poor broadband 1 mile from exchange
An attenuation figure of 57db would indicate the line length is at least 4.1Km .

Re: 7800DXL - poor broadband 1 mile from exchange
I have a similar problem so posting under this message. ...but if you recommend creating a new message then just let me know.
I'm also probably about 2 miles form the exchange, but on initial installation of the 7800DXL (started about 10 days ago with fine tuning to SNR of about 2.5 with xDSL mode of G.Dmt) I managed to improve my download speed from approx 2.3Mbps to about 4Mbps. ...but only for a few days! Then it all changed overnight and I'm now back to about 2.6Mbps down. Re-tried going through the xDSL mode and SNR settings, rebooting, power-off/on but no improvements. I've attached a screen-shot (7800DXL_image01) of the Status/Stats/xDSL screen but can provide more if required.
Any guidance on my config will be really appreciated to try and get me back to the improved 4mbps

General setup is...
- 3 PCs on LAN - 2 on CAT6 cable, other on wireless, but testing done when I'm only user of LAN
Using BT business broadband
Updated to latest 2.32d firmware
Using a NTE5 with seperate ADSL and phone sockets installed by BT openreach just before installing the 7800DXL
Using BTs Wholesale tester at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ to test speeds
