Fibre connection/setup

We have been using a 7800DXL for a year now on a poor quality line with great success. On monday we have a BT engineer coming to upgrade us to fibre (Using Plusnet as ISP).... then I realised I don't know how to configure the router. Does the router plug straight into the new master socket using the EWan socket or do I need to buy a fibre modem? Couldn't find anywhere in the setup to select EWan?

You will need a fibre modem, that connects the to routers EWAN port, when running through the quick setup process you select 'Ethernet' (also known as EWAN) PPPOE, and enter your plusnet username and password

Keen to know how this goes. Fibre is being laid down my street, I also use Plusnet, and also have a DXL7800.

It should go fine with the Bipac 7800DXL, a lot of users here are using the same setup method (Ethernet >> PPPOE)

Yes that will be interesting (as its plusnet in question, I don't think they will provide a BT Home Hub 5)

WOW, what a coincidence, today the BT Broadband Tracker page, which I had a changedetection.org watch on for my number, suddenly listed FTTC as being available. Lo and Behold, Plusnet accepted an order, and it's being installed on the 14th...

Interestingly, the Plusnet signup page is rather vague, telling me I need a new router and that it's £5.99 postage. I guess the BT guy comes with a modem AS WELL, and the router is because SOME Plusnet routers don't have WAN ports. (just a guess). Either way, £5.99 for a spare is handy to have.. I'm guessing it won't be needed.

Wow, it was easy and works well. BT Engineer turned up with modem, fitted it and plugged in the Router. Set it up and it was running. To be honest I wasn't home and my sixteen year old sorted it out, so even easier for me. Brilliant router, means we have fibre without having to reconfigure our LAN setup.

Fibre speed is interesting, we were at around 1mb, now around 36mb so quite an improvement.... some machines are still running slow though and it is showing that we background processes running that are slowing machines down rather than the internet.... guess we need to have a cleanup to finish the job off.

Ought to be clear on what the BT engineer turned up with:

Fibre Modem plus longer cable if you ordered that at the time.


Although we didn't need it, I did pay £5.99 for the Plusnet router just in case. This arrived from Plusnet in the post a few days before.
