Re: 5Ghz Network on 8900AX-1600 R2 causing battery drain on mobile device

I have exactly the same issue with the 8900AX2400. My phone Samsung Galaxy S7 seems to keep getting dropped off the wireless connection and reconnects every 1 minute or so. I can see this while using the phone as I keep getting a pop up saying sign in to network and then another straight after saying it has connected to 5Ghz. Similar issue with Iphone 7 but Iphone doesn't reconnect as quickly and instead switches to 4G which has meant I've run up a large amount of data usage without knowing it.

Other devices such as Belkin access point and laptops don't seem to have the same issue?

Any suggestions? I've just bought the router so most settings are factory default, firmware is 2.52.d12.

Sorry, but I think this must be a separate problem. I have absolutely no problems with connectivity - the Billion is rock solid in that department. The only issue I have is the battery drain - which may or may not be a Note 4 related issue (I have yet to get the opportunity to try a different Android device on 5Ghz). You might try disabling WMM APSD - I experienced some issues with dropped connections on my 2.4Ghz network with older devices that were incompatible with this. Turning it off solved the issue. I'm experimenting today with turning it off on the 5Ghz as well to see if it affects the battery drain.

Make sure there are not any other wireless transmitters near the router, that might cause interference. (sounds like a interference issue)

Also try changing the 5ghz channel to see if that helps

Try to Forget the Network on your mobile devices and connect again.

Finally if you Belkin access point also has 5ghz, try switching it off for a quick test and see how the connectivity is with your phones

Disabling WMM APSD on the 5Ghz didn't make any difference to the battery drain. Attached is a battery graph from this morning - I didn't leave it for as long this time, but again the point of switch-over to the Netgear network is clearly visible. :|

EDIT: Just for reference, the model of Netgear Extender I'm using is EX6130.

Thanks for the response Kinsman and Billion_fan and apologies for hijacking. I was sure my issue was the same as can see my battery drain and this constant re-connect on 5G.

I don't have "WMM APSD" on the 2400 anywhere but on 2.4G there is "Disable WMM Advertise" and "WMM(Wi-Fi Multimedia)" do I disable both of these? There are no WMM options on 5G.

I tried changing the channel to a couple of the other channels but it hasn't made any difference. In fact seems to have made things worse as Galaxy keeps switching to 4g mobile data rather than reconnecting now (same as Iphone does). Would it be worth me changing the channel to "AUTO" or "WPA Group Rekey Interval" to a higher value?

My Belkin access point is wireless to Ethernet I don't have any other routers transmitting in the house and my house is detached so shouldn't be any interference.

Thanks

Have you named the 2.4ghz and 5ghz with the same SSID?? Other devices that also use a wireless signal to transmit eg wireless home phones, wireless streamers etc (anything that transmits a wifi signal and operates on the 5ghz band) might cause interference issues.

Last resort try resetting the device back to factory default settings, configure the WAN and change the wifi password only (leave all other settings as default including the SSID) and see if the same issue occurs.

I'll get our engineers to have a look and see if they can spot any issues
