Re: 7800N Internet Connectivity on new PC
Okay, I plugged my desktop into my laptop via ethernet, and the desktop was able to share the internet connection from my laptop with no problems. I then plugged it back into the ethernet cable direct to the router and it works for about 30 seconds before going back to the previous problem. I should note that the direct cable to the router plays fine with my laptop, so the fault probably isn't with that.
This hasn't thrown any light on the issue to me but hopefully might give someone some ideas. Also, if you have any thoughts as to what might be at fault other than the router (network adapter(mobo)?) then let me know and I can post this around some more forums!

Did you do these steps ?
Its sounding more like the router is the cause.
Code: Select all
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Have you tried a ping test in CMD (command prompt)
(Open command prompt in windows, type ping 8.8.8.8 then enter, also try to ping www.google.co.uk)
Another important thing make sure you disable your wireless client (wireless card)
Finally try and ping 192.168.1.254
Let us know the results

Try changing the DNS servers in the affected computer to either Google 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 or Open DNS 208.67.222.222 /208.67.220.220 to see if it will resolve.
There is another set that I use now and again and they are 4.2.2.1 / 4.2.2.2
These are the steps on how to change the DNS servers to whichever you choose should you not have done it before, but try Google's first
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/15 ... s-7-a.html
When you were switching the router and computer off, did you also disconnect the ADSL and power cable for a couple of mins with all computers/device off as well.
If you haven't, then give this a try - it's called a power cycle and while the router is working okay for another computer - sometimes it's just the configuration that needs resetting for a different machine.
Switch just the router on and allow it to initialize before switching just the desktop back on and wiring up.
If you still cannot connect then can you run an ipconfig /all from the cmd prompt and you will need to copy it across to the laptop to copy & paste into your next post along with an ipconfig /all from the laptop.

I don't suppose the router's firewall has ethernet MAC filtering switched on?

I'd already tried pinging, but I can confirm there's no response. This desktop doesn't have a wireless card.billion_fan wrote:Have you tried a ping test in CMD (command prompt)

Unfortunately not, just checked.tinytim wrote:I don't suppose the router's firewall has ethernet MAC filtering switched on?
Tried this with no luck.Tomken wrote:Try changing the DNS servers in the affected computer to either Google 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 or Open DNS 208.67.222.222 /208.67.220.220 to see if it will resolve.
No change with this either.Tomken wrote:

Here's the content of ipconfig /all:Tomken wrote:

So you didn't get a reply from the routers IP address?? (when pinging the router IP)
Also have you tried to use the EWAN port on the router, and connect your PC to this port??

Nope, I don't know how that works either. As you can see from ipconfig, it is the correct router address that we're pinging. The EWAN port behaves the same as the others.

Re: 7800N Internet Connectivity on new PC
Can you either run an ipconfig /all on the laptop or log into the router/DHCP table to check which IPv4 address has been assigned to it and that the desktop isn't the same as the laptop when the laptop has been switched off.
The desktop is currently assigned 192.168.1.109 but sometimes assigning a static IP can produce a result whereas the DHCP assigned one doesn't want to play for some reason or other.
As the desktop can connect to the Internet however briefly via the router would suggest that the LAN driver is okay, while changing the Speed & Duplex to one of the other options can sometimes resolve connectivity problems, but I still have the feeling that this somehow relates to your previous Uni connection.
These are accessed via Device Manager/Network Adapter > right click on the LAN Adapter/Properties/Advanced and select Speed & Duplex from the left pane, then use the right dropdown to try the various options.
If you don't get anywhere with that, then can you download and copy across this program http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/ and run it with just these boxes ticked and hopefully they may tell us something.
List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Mini Dump Files
Have you run Windows Troubleshooter on this yet ?
