Wireless problems with v2.31

Post by NigelS »

Just updated to the latest release f/w 2.31 for the 7800VDOX. It was fine for the first day or so after, but then the 5GHz connection would disconnect and the SSID is now longer visible on my PC. Then a while later the 2.4GHz also went walk about. Had to reboot the router to get it back to normal again. Before upgrading the f/w the router was rock solid. Wish I'd never upgraded but was mislead by the description on the Billion website that said it was an important upgrade. Yes, I did do a factory reset as part of the f/w upgrade process and did a clean setup.

Anyone else having problems with the newest f/w?

Hi

No problems here with the latest firmware on Wi-Fi.

Couple of things to try, if you are all 'N' and have no legacy devices (i.e. b/g), find the setting in Advanced on both 2.4 and 5 for 'Support 802.11n client only' and set this to On. This gets rid of the older legacy support and keeps things cleaner.

Next check the channels for both, do you have them set to "Auto"? This can cause the channels to change automatically however in the case of 5G this could see it using a channel that isn't supported by some other devices, fix 5G to channel 36, little reason to worry about interference on 5G, at the moment anyway.

Fix 2.4G as well if set to auto to any channel for the time being.

Under the basic settings for both, make sure the country is selected correctly.

Unfortunately Billion skip Wi-Fi certification, so this means testing for compatibility is only as good (or as poor) as Billion want to spend on it.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Try disabling 'obss coexistence' on both 2.4g and 5g, found under the 'Advanced' menu.

What does this do, and what would be the consequence of disabling it?

(later)
scratch that, I just checked - they are set to disabled already in the default setting.

Thanks for the suggestions. After the factory reset both Wi-Fi channels were set to actual channels. I made the change to Auto to see if that would solve the problem (I figured maybe something was interfering on the set channel). If problem persists I will set them back to a fixed channel number.
Strangely, when I set the options to Auto, the channel numbers chosen by the router don't even exist in the drop down list of available options for both 2.4GHz (channel 1) and 5GHz (channel 136).

I use both 5GHz and 2.4GHz channels and I do still have a few legacy items which need 2.4GHz 802.11g so I can't set the option to support only n devices.

Definitely have a problem with the WiFi since I upgraded to 2.31.
Currently I am seeing a situation where my laptops are connected to the WiFi SSIDs but there is "Limited Conectivity" or "No Internet Connection".
The router is still providing an internet connection to devices connected by Cat5e cable.

Where is a link to the older f/w please - I am going to have to down-grade the f/w again.
The original version was rock steady on WiFi.

Whatever was the immediately previous f/w, yes I think it was 2.24b

I will continue to monitor before downgrading, but so far the wireless has become unresponsive after about 2 days or less of usage. Under f/w 2.24 I had solid usage for over 68 days without any wifi problems.

Hi,

I had legacy support switched on for an old HP wireless b printer. Ditched the printer, switched off legacy support and not had a single problem since. I'm using Macs/PCs/iPhones/iPads and rock solid since then. A lot of my Mac devices are never rebooted and just go to sleep - that seems to work well. On the old firmware, it had difficulty with devices waking from sleep.

Only frustration is that I got a new wireless printer, and it won't automatically reconnect if the router is rebooted/power drops. Not sure if this is the router or the printer, however.

Hope you get it sorted.

Cheers,
JonathanN
