Setting up vectoring for 8800NL R2 in Irland with eir/vodafone

So I'm in Ireland and have a 8800NL working OK, but I seem to be getting a lot more failed connections. For example, when I type an address in the browser bar (Chrome & Opera), I get fairly frequent DNS lookup errors. The problem usually resolves after a minute or two.

I have the impression that VDSL standards are a bit loose and tend to need 'fine-tuning'? Or maybe it's providers all making their own 'standards'. Is there anyone here who could help me out with trying to tune my router?

I would change the DNS servers,

1. Login to router
2. Click on 'Advanced Setup >> DNS >> DNS'
3. Select 'Use the following Static DNS IP address' found in the middle of the page
4. In the 'Primary DNS server' section enter '8.8.8.8'
5. In the 'Secondary DNS server' section enter '8.8.4.4'
6. Click on 'Apply'

Regarding tweaking VDSL (FTTC) there are no tweaks available for VDSL setups on the Billion, (you can only tweak the ADSL)

Vectoring/G.INP is enabled by default, if your ISP/exchange and enabled it

Thanks for the info billion_fan, I'll try those servers now.

Good to know there's nothing I can do about the vectoring too! I'm not too bothered if I can squeeze a little more speed out of the connection, reliability's more important for me.

By the way, here's the info I could find on the provider's end. Is this the same as "Vectoring/G.INP"?
OpenEir use Huawei DSLAMS(exchange modems) that implement G.Vectoring (G.993.5) which boosts VDSL2 speeds from 10 to 30%. Vectoring works by collaboration between the modem and DSLAM so modem compatibility is important and not always assured.

Well they don't mention G.INP but they do mention vectoring, normally if you are far away from the exchange, you won't see a massive change with vectoring enabled, as the attenuation is the problem, not crosstalk or noise.

INP = intended to provide enhanced protection against impulse noise or increase

Vectoring - noise cancelling technology to reduce interference from adjacent lines or other services or plant (equipment). Vectoring is defined by the ITU-T standard G.993.5.

Yeah, from my Googling / Wikipedia-ing...

G.INP = G.993.4
G.Vector = G.993.5
? (this is a bit double-dutch to me, to be honest)

So the 8800NL R2 supports G.993.5 out of the box?
I'm wondering if there's a way to confirm it's working properly. Looking on local forums the only sure-fire method seems to be to install and compare both the provider's equipment and the third party and compare stats. Unfortunately I've gone and recycled their box.

I've been going through the various status pages on the router's interface and can't really confirm anything more than Mode: VDSL2
I also note:

Code: Select all

Attainable Rate (Kbps)	40984	11993
Rate (Kbps)	  30717	8191
Which seems to confirm I'm on a 40Mb line, when I do a speed test I usually get about 24Mb.
I live 850m from the exchange.

(btw, so far so good with the new DNS servers)

The sync rate on your line is 30717,

Yes the device supports vectoring out of the box.

There isn't a way to tell if vectoring in enabled on your line by looking at the web gui, unfortunately, but when the device syncs it should list within the system log if g.inp is enabled.
