8800NL R2 with latest firmware connected but unusable

Hi Guys,
Just bought the 8800NL R2 and tried to connected to Plusnet.
I am on ADSL2+ and have been having some line issues with the plusnet one router and have also been trying a BT HH5.
I bought the 8800 to try and get a better insight into what was wrong.
The other modems are connecting and running between 3 - 7 mbps.
However on connecting the Billion I am getting 0.01 mbps. It connects and authenticates and can ping sites but when trying to transfer a website is dies.
Is this likely to be a faulty modem or something else. I used the standard ADSL connection instructions from plusnet.
Anyone got any advice. Have tried a factory reset and just get the latest firmware on there.
