Failing to reinstall my 8800NL v1

A week or so back there were several incidents when I could not get a connection to my ISP's DNS nameservers with the Billion. I revered to my ISP supplied router. Now I have more time I am attempting to reinstall the Billion.
I am struggling, even though following the Quick Install Guide. I never get beyond wireless set up: it always fails. I am wondering if any friend can give me some thoughts on what the problems could be and how to correct them. Please! Could the router be failing, or some else be the cause?

Who is your ISP??
Are you on a fibre or ADSL connection??
Is the DSL light on, on front of the router??

Yes, (or was when I tired using it. As said, I have abandoned it.

Try the following
1. Reset the unit back to factory default settings
2. Click on 'Configuration >> WAN >> WAN Service'
3. Click on the 'Edit' button for the 'PTM >> PPPoE' interface
4. Enter your plusnet broadband username and password in sections provided and make sure the '802.1P Priority is set to 0 and the '802.1Q VLAN ID' is set to '101'
5. Click on 'Apply'
6. After a few minutes check to see if the 'Internet' LED is lit green on the front of the router

Please accept my apologies for the late reply, and also that my OP may have been misleading.
To clarify; each time in the EZSO I get as far as 2.3 VDSL (Fibre) Configuration. This runs for some time but in the end fails. Thank you for your advice, but I am unsure how I get to carry out items 2 on wards in view of the failure.
I hope I'ts not me having a bad day, but can you please guide me further?

I have added step 1a for you

http://192.168.1.254 (username = admin, password = admin)
2. Click on 'Configuration >> WAN >> WAN Service'
3. Click on the 'Edit' button for the 'PTM >> PPPoE' interface
4. Enter your plusnet broadband username and password in sections provided and make sure the '802.1P Priority is set to 0 and the '802.1Q VLAN ID' is set to '101'
5. Click on 'Apply'

Thank you. I shall do that, but not straightway, so as not to risk too many router swaps and speed.

The deed is done with a 2Mb speed increase.

Oddly although I had reset to factory, I could not log in with admin as the password, but had to use the one I'd selected a few days back. Strange?

As long as the device is setup now you should be fine

Please accept my apologies for not replying sooner.
I have been able to make neither a WiFi nor an Ethernet connection. With both the network is not identified, and Win 10 diagnostics cannot cure the problem. ISTM, that as my ISP's router works fine, the router is faulty. I do have a copy of wired and wireless network properties for posting, if useful, but unless anyone suggests otherwise I am going to replace it.
If I continue with Billion, all I see under £100 is the 8800NL r2 which some claim is inferior to the r1. Has anyone a comment? I'm on a FTTC connection, estimated @ 1080 mtrs from the DSLAM on a D side, containing some ali and with heavy crosstalk. Will the r2 be that much slower? Suggestions for alternatives; new or preowned?
