Mail Alert

Just received and set up up 7800DXL today.
All gone (mostly) well apart from setting up Mail Alert. I can't get the router to send me an e-mail. When I click on "Account Test" I get another tab in Firefox telling me "Testing. Please wait...". It refreshes continually but no result and no e-mail.
My SMTP Server is relay.free-online.net.
I enter the e-mail address username and password. They contain alphanumeric characters and punctuation characters, such as + # and others.
I've had SSL on and off. Port is 25.
E-mail address has been used a million times and working elsewhere with test messages.
I've done this same thing with the older ZyXEL router and my NAS and they worked straight-away.

Does anyone else get emails?
I'm thinking that it may be the use of non alphanumeric characters?
I'm a very experienced computer user and I know I must be doing something stupid, but I can't see what!

I made a new e-mail account and didn't use non-alphanumeric characters in the username and password and now I get somewhere:
email: FATAL: Could not connect to server: relay.free-online.net on port: 25: Connection refused
email: FATAL: Send fail
Because there isn't a hang up any more, I think it shows that only alphanumeric characters are allowed which, of course, goes against the standards. I saw a message in another forum where Billion support told a user that he wasn't allowed an underline in the e-mail address!

Ah-ah! But my STMP Server address has a dash character in it! I typed in the IP address instead and now I get what looks like success - a cryptic:
email: Finish
LATER: I've got the bit between the teeth now
Further testing shows that non-alphanumeric characters are allowed in the username (at least '+' and '-') just not in the password.

Hope this helps others.

And come on Billion, whatever parsing you use for these processes is totally out-of-date - do catch up

Hi

I responded to your other post.

Is relay.free-online.net using port 25, a lot of relays seem to use SSL now and want authentication? Try ticking SSL Enabled and use port 587 if you haven't already? Not that this function is a lot of use for emailing logs at the moment as per my other post.

Of course this will not help much if Billion have some buggy validation or code that doesn't like non alphanumeric characters.

Regards

Phil

I use this successfully with my 7800DXL, 2.32b and smtp.live.com and SSL. I get notified every time a new WAN IP is assigned to me.
