Remote access security

Hi all,
Is is possible have the Web GUI answer to and only to https, 443 traffic? Is it not the case that by default your user name and password is sent over the internet un-encrypted?
Is there any other options to tighten this up? I guess you can set it to go via VPN, are there other options? What would be considered best practice?
To put this in context, I want external access to the router so I can enable virtual servers from external locations rather than leave them open all the time.
Thanks
