How do I access Storage Device From External Location

Post by barnesy1977 »

Hi all,

I've recently purchased a Billion BiPAC 7800DXL, and just now I've connected a storage device to the USB input, to keep all photos/music/films on etc, so any of us can access it around the house at any time etc (not to mention my hard drive was getting full). This has worked fine, and to access it from around the house, I just need to enter \\192.168.1.254 into (the only difference to the Home IP of the router being the \\ part). However I'm now wondering how I get access to the same storage device from an external location, such as at work, or even on my phone to play music from. I know my static IP address, but I'm not sure what I need to enter after this, or what settings I need to apply/add on the setup of the router. Also I'm unsure what consequences of having a user & password setup to access the storage device would have, if any (for example if trying to access music from the storage device via my smart phone).

I've successfully added access to my CCTV system (using port forwarding), which I can access remotely from anywhere via laptop or smart phone, but I just can't figure this one out :-/

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
David

You need to setup an account with a ddns service. You can find free and paid ones. With Billion I use minidns.net. It's free and it works well.
Create an account on their site and then enter the details under the ddns section in the router configuration.
After you will be able to access your connection entering an address like xxxxxx.minidns.net.

Ah thanks for that. I'll give it a go in the week :-)
