Billion 8800NL

Just been having a look at this router and while I don't have Fibre, it looks a decently priced replacement for my 7800N.

There's one thing that concerns me and that it says that it may need a firmware update - how would this be determined - and how does it compare to the 7800N for wireless range ?

The 8800NL will launch with UK firmware, working out of the box. Any updates will be posted on the support section of the website as per usual.

It's our entry level VDSL wireless modem router - with internal antennas.

7800N obviously has external antennas so wireless performance will be different.

I take it by "different" you mean the 7800N will be better

Living in a bungalow - wireless range hasn't been a problem for me, but it may be of interest to others.

I couldn't see which chipset it uses from the specs, but I was impressed with the 7800N's Broadcom chipset with having a Downstream Atten. of 47 - 50dB which held the connection when the SNRM was dropping quite low, which TalkTalk's earlier routers were unable to maintain.

Will the 8800NL be on a par with the 7800N for that ?

The 8800NL uses Broadcom chipset as well so in terms of ADSL performance it will be similar to the 7800N as it also has the SNR tweak for the ADSL.

Dont forget it has the 'Guest Wireless Network' feature, eg for limiting kids usage times

What about 3G/4G dongles for backup internet service? I need an all in one VDSL modem router that has this feature.

I think our higher 8800 model will support 3G/4G dongles once released.

I have already ordered the Bipac 8800NL from Broadband Buyer due the dispatched on the 19th May.
I'm currently using the Bipac 7800N, the SNR tweak is excellent i've set mine to 3db and i'm syncing at 22500 kbps.
We due to get fibre by the 31st May.

Perhaps you could add your review on the forum when you get it up and running.

Do you really need fibre with the speed you are already getting ?
