Some miscellaneous settings in 8800NL

Post by gatekeeper »

I'm wondering about a number of miscellaneous routing/ADSL settings in the 8800NL, all of which for the present I've left in the disabled state. How should the following be configured:

1) Configuration >> LAN. Should 'LAN side Firewall' be disabled? Is this setting only relevant for when a separate, dedicated firewall device is being used?

2) Configuration >> ALG >> Parameters. Normally, for ADSL operation, should SIP and H.323 be enabled or disabled?

3) Under DSL Parameters, what is US0?

4) Status >> Device Information. Should SNMP Agent be enabled, or disabled?

1. This option is used when isolating ports or guest wifi networks, this should not be ticked for normal setups (otherwise you will lock yourself out of the router)
2. Leave these disabled (these two settings are used VOIP phones and video conferencing equipment)
3. Its a upstream frequency band used for ADSL (ADSL1 uses only US0 and DS1 while VDSL2 uses up to DS2)
4. SNMP should only be enabled if you are running a SNMP server (more for business use, a overkill for a standard home setups)

Looks like I've got most of those properly configured, then.

Regarding 3, I am actually on ADSL1, rather than anything faster. I'm on the end of a fairly long line to the exchange. So, presumably I should enable US0?

When I went back and looked more carefully at DSL Parameters, US0 was in any event greyed out as enabled.
