8800NL wifi speeds

Post by aslan44 »

I have just purchased the 8800NL to replace the plusnet standard FTTC equipment. I bought it primarily to restrict my children’s internet time and to try and fix some NAT issues for online gaming. Both problems now sorted. :D

However, I seem to have much lower wifi speeds. I’m on plusnet FTTC 80/20 and was getting 68/16 actual on the old equipment. On the new 8800NL im getting 30/19. In the summary section of the 8800NL it says I’m getting 78/20 of an attainable rate of 78/29. I cannot plug in directly via Ethernet to check as my laptop doesn’t have an Ethernet connection. My laptop is also in the same room about 3ft away from the 8800NL so walls are not an issue.

I have gone into the wireless configuration and changed my channel to 8 as nothing nearby is using this. It is still poor. Is there anything else I can try? Have I missed some other setting somewhere? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Try changing the bandwidth to 20/40mhz found under the 'Wireless >> Advanced' also make sure your wireless security is set to WPA2/AES

Thanks for the quick reply... I already have the security settings for WPA2 AES and 20/40 option set.

What I find strange is that my upload speed has slightly increased since changing the router but the download is massively reduced 68 to 30ish.

I am going to try putting my old openreach modem back in and use the 8800NL as an access point and see if this makes a difference. I shall report back in a few days.

If anyone else, especially plusnet fibre users, have any other suggestions please let me know.

Check out the sync rate on the 8800NL, is should indicate the sync rate, also if possible try to do a speed test with a wired computer to see if you have any improvement (I know your laptop does not have a wired LAN connection, maybe you test with a friends laptop)

Well, my laptop did in fact have an ethernet connection. There was a flap to pull down to extend the size of the slot to fit the cable into ;)

I tested the speed direct over ethernet and it's fine. 72 and 18 so no problem with the speed from the line. Perhaps I have a fault with the wifi as surely it shouldn't drop to 30/18 when it's only 3ft away?

As for the sync rate, can you tell me where I could find this information. I can't see it anywhere in the router settings/config. Thanks

You can find the sync speed on the status page of the router for more stats click on 'Status >> Statistics >> xDSL'

Here are some of my speeds tests one with a LAN connection and the other with wireless connection around three feet away, also attached is the settings I used for this test

Thank you Billion_fan,
I've checked my settings match yours. They do except, 20/40 only ever seems to use 20 and my channel is now set to 9 as this has increased the speeds to 38.

Not sure if I have linked the image correctly, but you can see the big rise where I used the ethernet cable.

I am going to set up my old equipment again and check it is not my laptop. If wifi speeds go up on the old equipment, I think I'll have to return the 8800NL as faulty :(
I was over the moon with it sorting out the NAT gaming problems and restricting my kids internet times but I think the poor wifi is unacceptable.
Thanks again for your help.

I've turned it off and on again and it now seems to be producing some excellent wifi speeds 68 and 19 which I'm happy with.
The only other thing I did was take the nintendo wii off the network but not sure how that could have affected it. Anyway, I'm very happy with it now just a little confused as to what caused it in the first place. :D
