I cannot help you with the first part of the thread, but I think there is a beta firmware update somewhere amongst these threads - but I installed it and managed to screw up the Billion.
I have the 8800 AXL - and am really pleased with it - it is highly configurable.

Firmware can be found here
viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3896, I don't think any customers have had issues with ECI and Broadcom combo (I think the open reach modem also uses a Broadcom chipset)
