Access router admin from external IP

Hi,
I've got a 7700n and would like to access the admin web page from outside my LAN (i.e. when away from home.)
I also have a machine in the DMZ which I use as a web server.
I almost have it working, I set-up a virtual server for port 8081 which goes to port 80 at the routers LAN address.
This initially appears to work - as the authentication dialog comes up - but strangely always fails to authenticate. After three attempts it gives me the 401 unauthorised page.
The username (admin) and password that I use work when I access the page from within the LAN.
Has anyone got this working? Any clues?
Thanks.
